US President Donald Trump's son-in-law is the focus of an FBI investigation into Russian interference in last year’s election, according to media reports in the US.

Senior White House advisor, Jared Kushner is allegedly being investigated over the "extent and nature" of his dealings with the Russian ambassador to the US, Sergei Kislyak and Moscow banker Sergei Gorkov.

Mr Gorkov is the chairman of VneshEconomBank - a state bank which has been under US sanctions since 2014.

The FBI, several congressional committees and a special counsel appointed by the Justice Department have been looking into potential links between President Trump's election campaign team and Russian officials seeking to influence the election.

Kushner – husband to President Trump’s daughter Ivanka - is believed to be the only current White House official under consideration as a key person in the probe, according to reports.

Officials told NBC news, the interest in Kushner does not mean investigators suspect him of a crime or intend to charge him.

Former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and sacked national security adviser Michael Flynn are both also believed to be subjects of the probe.

The network said it is not known whether Kushner has received any requests from the FBI for records.

One of Kushner's attorneys, Jamie Gorelick, said in a statement her client would cooperate with the investigation.

“Mr Kushner previously volunteered to share with Congress what he knows about these meetings. He will do the same if he is contacted in connection with any other inquiry,” Mrs Gorelick said.

The investigation is being led by ex-FBI chief Robert Mueller - following the abrupt sacking of former FBI director James Comey.

Mr Trump has been accompanied by Mr Kushner and his daughter Ivanka during his first foreign presidential trip.

Before heading off on the week-long tour, the President suggested he was being unfairly treated in the Russia investigation, claiming that he was the victim of the "greatest witch hunt" in US political history.
