Samsung had a bumpy 2016, to put it mildly. After the firm opted to discontinue its Note 7 device, everyone has been waiting with baited breath to see what they do next. As we await their appearance at Mobile World Congress, let's take a look at their mid-range phone.

This is the Samsung Galaxy A5, which retails from €389.99 on pay as you go.

Out of the box, this phone has the classic Samsung look, with a 5.2-inch screen. Internally there's a Octa-core 1.9 GHz processor, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of built-in storage. As with the majority of Samsung's phones, the A5 has a microSD slot, meaning the internal memory can be expanded up to 256GB.

If you're an Android fan, you'll love the A5. It's as solid a device as any that has crossed my desk in recent years. Aside from being excellent at doing the basics, there's a rather impressive 16 MP, f/1.9, 27mm, autofocus, LED flash on the back of the phone.

Having used the A5 as my main device for a number of days, I've struggled to find anything to complain about. As with every smartphone, the battery life could be better, but the 3,000mAh battery inside the A5 does a good job. It's also worth noting that the A5 has 'fast charging' capabilities.

The device is charged via USB C, which is still a pain when many of us of have micro USB accessories and chargers.

At €389.99, this device sits comfortably in the 'mid-range' price bracket, but has a premium feel to it. It delivers on every front and sits very comfortably in the hand. If you want a high-powered phone without the high price tag, check out the A5.
