Irish Oscar nominee Ruth Negga is preparing for her first Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles tonight.

The Limerick actress has been nominated in the Best Actress category for her role in the historical drama, Loving.

Negga has been nominated for a host of awards for her turn as Mildred in the acclaimed film - including the Oscars, Golden Globes and Critics Choice awards.

The film follows Mildred and Richard Loving, the couple behind a pivotal 1967 civil rights case.

Following the inter-racial couple’s marriage in June 1958 they were arrested and sentenced to a year in the state penitentiary - a sentence that was suspended on the condition that they be exiled from the state of Virginia.

The couple spent the next nine years fighting the verdict - determined to be together in their home state.

Costume designer Consolata Boyle is also nominated for her work on the film Florence Foster Jenkins.

The Lobster, starring Colin Farrell, and funded by the Irish Film Board, is among the hopefuls in the Best Original Screenplay Category.

Negga is facing stiff competition from Emma Stone in the musical La La Land, which is widely tipped to cement its success in awards season.

The film has garnered a record-equalling 14 nominations.

Stone has said the love story between her character and Sebastian, played by Ryan Gosling, is what attracted her to the project.

“The reason the film touched me so deeply reading the script and wanting to be part of it was the simplicity of the love story between these two characters,” she said.

“I think even in this larger than life ultra-colourful Technicolor world, there is a very simple love story at its core.”

The awards are set to get underway at 01:30 am Irish time.
