Storm Desmond causes power outages and travel delays across the country

There have been power outages, flooding, travel delays and sporting events cancelled as high winds and heavy rain continue to hit Ireland today.

Thousands of customers across the country are without power today after Storm Desmond made landfall last night.

ESB Networks says crews have been working since first light to repair damage.

The worst affected areas are said to be Tuam, Letterkenny, Killybegs, Belmullet, Galway, Athlone and Mitchelstown.

Meanwhile sporting events both at home in the UK have been cancelled as a result of the poor weather conditions.

Leinster's Pro12 match against Glasgow Warriors has been postponed. It was due to take place in Glasgow at 3pm today.

The Clonakilty marathon was also cancelled this morning, due to heavy rain and high winds in West Cork.

Organisers were forced to called off the race due to health and safety concerns.

Runners are advised to retain their race number for a future rescheduled date, which will be announced in the coming weeks.

Met Éireann has issued five weather warnings for today, with a status red rainfall warning - the highest level warning - in place for Connacht and counties Donegal, Clare, and Kerry until the early hours of tomorrow morning.

The Road Safety Authority has advised drivers not to make any unnecessary journeys with accumulations of up to 70 millimetres of rain forecast.

Irish Ferries have cancelled all Jonathan Swift fastcraft sailings, with passengers being accommodated on cruise ferry sailings instead.

A number of flights to and from Dublin, Cork, Shannon and Farranfore Airports have been delayed or cancelled as a result of the storm.

Passengers are being advised to check the status of flights with their airline.
