An investigation is underway after a stairway collapsed at Tayto Park last night.

Nine people were taken to hospital following the incident in Co Meath.

Many thought what they were witnessing was the latest thriller from the new 'House of Horrors' attraction, which had just opened as part of an After Dark Halloween event.

A statement issued on behalf of Tayto Park says the lower portion of a permanent staircase leading to the 'House of Horrors' gave way.

The park says its emergency plan was immediately put in place, and emergency services attended the scene.

It adds that people were transported to hospitals in the city as a precautionary measure to assess their injuries.

"The management of Tayto Park will co-operate fully with the investigation as the safety of our guests is paramount", it says.

The park is open from 10.00am Sunday. The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) is investigating the incident.
