Shops are seeing a small rise in business this Christmas - but shops in Dublin are feeling the benefits more than provincial businesses.

The retail sector is getting ready for the best Christmas sales figures in eight years.

Shops are hoping for a further upturn in trade this coming week as weather conditions are set to improve.

These people in Dublin city centre tell us how they're feeling about their Christmas preparations:

However Retail Excellence Ireland says a 'three tier economy' is forming here when it comes to shopping.

The Dublin evening economy is said to be 'robust and trading exceptionally well', while the day time economy is 'performing well'.

The provincial economy is reported to be lagging behind with 'weak footfall and underwhelming consumer activity'. However the group says the next week is a crucial time for the sector with emigrants and urban workers travelling home for the holidays.

Meanwhile there are also reports of a sharp increase in the number of counterfeit items being sold in market stalls, while Christmas 2015 is said to have been a 'milestone' in the number of people shopping online (influenced by the poor weather).

Lynn Drumgoole, Head of Public Affairs at Retail Excellence Ireland, says the Christmas rush is being felt in all parts of the country despite the differences between different regions.
