A teenage girl who was kidnapped and held captive in a man's apartment for nearly two years has escaped.

The 15-year-old ran from the Tokyo flat while her captor was shopping, and called her family from a payphone yesterday.

She told detectives she managed to escape because the man forgot to lock the door from outside when he went out.

Two years ago, when the girl went missing at the age of 13, it was a major news story in the country.

A 23-year-old man has been held on suspicion of kidnapping. It is reported that he was bleeding when arrested, from an apparent self-inflicted wound to the neck with a box-cutter.

NHK reports that while the girl had been kept in the apartment she had not actually been physically tied up, but had been closely and constantly watched by her captor.

Local newspaper Asahi Shimbun reports that the girl disappeared after leaving her junior high school shortly after 3 p.m. on March 10, 2014. A first-grader at the time, she was last seen chatting with a young man in front of her home in Asaka. Her mother found a note, apparently written by the daughter, in the family’s post box later the day that asked the family not to search for her. The family immediately filed a missing persons report with Saitama police.
