A 22-year-old man has died after being attacked by his own dog in Preston.

The victim, named on a Facebook tribute page as Liam Hewitson, was treated at the scene by paramedics but he subsequently died of his injuries.

The dog, which belonged to the man, was taken from the terraced house in Dundonald Street, and was put down by vets.

Police have not said what breed of dog was involved, but unconfirmed reports suggest it was a pit bull terrier.

Officers were called to the address by the ambulance service at around 3.45pm on New Year's Day, following reports a man had been bitten by a dog.

Groups of young people have left bunches of flowers outside the property.

One man, who said he was the victim's cousin, said "he had an epileptic fit" at the time of the attack.

One woman shouted to neighbours not to reveal anything about the victim.

On Facebook Mizzy B Saeed wrote: "Tragic news Saw liam shortly before the incident. Exchanged hi/hello Awful news hasn't sunk in yet. Thoughts and prayers with his family (Liam's neighbour)."

Chantelle Hewitson wrote: "Rest In peace little cousin so heartbreaking you with your beautiful mum now Liam rest in paradise love you always xxxx".

DI Jane Webb of Preston CID said: "This is a tragic incident in which a man has sadly died.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances and my thoughts very much remain with his family who are being supported by specially trained officers at this time."
