The Labour party says if they are re-elected they'll recruit 700 gardaí each year to return the force to peak strength.

They also want to hire 1,000 civilian gardaí to free up officers on desk jobs for front-line duty.

They have launched their plan for community policing, which includes setting up a serious and organised crime unit.

This unit would focus on organised crime, serious fraud, cyber-crime and suspicious financial transactions.

The party also says they intend to legislate to improve the protections for victims of domestic violence and to make the courts process easier for people in that situation.

The party costs the recruitment of gardaí at €76.4 million euro, with another €38.2 million for recruiting 1,000 civilian gardaí.
