With Game of Thrones having just made Emmy history by claiming the most gongs ever awarded to a TV drama – with two seasons left in the tank – writer George RR Martin has celebrated the HBO show’s success with a hint that there might be more to come from Westeros in the future. Albeit from the past, so to speak.

Deadline is reporting that after the series’ second win in a row for ‘Outstanding Drama’, members of the GoT cast and crew answered questions in the press room backstage at the Emmy show. And in his own words, Martin revealed that he has no aversion to penning a prequel series set before A Song of Ice & Fire launched fantasy television into the stratosphere.

“I do have thousands of pages of fake history of everything that led up to Game of Thrones, so there’s a lot of material there and I’m writing more,” the 68-year-old bestselling author said.

“At the moment, we still have this show to finish and I still have two books to finish so that’s all speculation,” he added.

The hit show still has two seasons left to finally resolve who should sit on the Iron Throne, though fans have been informed that both seasons will likely be shorter than previous ones and that the broadcast date for the forthcoming penultimate run of episodes is set to be delayed. Showrunner DB Weiss promised that it would be worth the wait, telling the gathered press that the next season “will be bigger and it will be better, but it will also be worse. But mostly better.”

According to their numerous acceptance speeches, the Game of Thrones team will be heading back to Northern Ireland in the coming days to kick off production on the seventh season. The series is expected to hit screens sometime in the Autumn of 2017.
