While in years gone by you had to wait until January to see discounts in the shops, these days you'll find plenty of retailers dropping their prices even before December 25th rolls around.

Here's your handy guide to the shops that are offering the best value for money as 2016 draws to a close...

The online giant generally lowers its prices on the likes of games, laptops and tablets during the period between Christmas Eve and December 31st, so if you're off work and idle on the couch, it could well be worth your while checking it out.

Argos

Hot on the heels of Black Friday and a massive jewellery sale, Argos kick-starts its latest sale on Christmas day. If you're in the market for big household appliances such as fridges and washing machines, you can save yourself hundreds of euro by taking a look here.

Arnotts

From 9am on St Stephen's Day, the famous Henry Street department store will be offering as much as 50% off many of its main brands in everything from fashion to homeware.

ASOS

The discount online fashion store's winter sale is already underway, with savings rising to as much as 70% as it continues.

Boden

The online clothing retailer’s winter sale is now on, with as much as 50% off selected items.

Currys

If you’re after electronics, Currys are already offering savings online. There are new deals being done every day, with 10% off all smart fitness devices and 15% off smart home devices being just two examples. Enter the code XMASDEAL at the checkout. You can save as much as €500 on a new American-style refrigerator and €750 on a Samsung Smart 4k Ultra HD television.

Debenhams

The sale gets underway online on Christmas Eve, while you can get in-store savings from St Stephen’s Day. There is half price off womenswear and shoes, with 50% slashed off plenty of other items. If you go the online route, there’s also free next day delivery when you spend over €50.

Dorothy Perkins

With big savings on over 2000 items online, the Dorothy Perkins sale is now on and runs until December 30th.

The premium department store’s sale is already underway and offering up to 40% off hundreds of items.

The department store generally kicks off their online sale at the super-early time of 4am on Christmas morning, with the doors to its actual stores opening on Stephen's Day. As much as 50% selected items, you'll also get a tenner off your first online order

The high street fashion outlet begins its online sale on Christmas Eve, with the stores following suit on Stephen's Day. Expect as much as 70% off.

Irish stores usually open at 6am on December 26th, offering at least 50% on nearly everything, barring the latest stock. The online sale gets going on Christmas Eve.

Schuh

The footwear retailer has been running its festive sale since early December, with deals available on over 800 items online. Expect to save somewhere in the region of 25% to 50%.

Toys R Us

It'll be a little too late for Santa, but parents looking to treat their kids at the start of 2017 can avail of a toy sale from Christmas Eve, with over 50% off many items.

Urban Outfitters

The trendy US retailer already has its sale on the go, with up to 40% off items from Nike, Adidas, Farah and Cheap Monday.
