Hailo has announced that it is making a €500,000 bonus fund available to encourage its drivers to take to Ireland's roads during peak-times over the festive period.

The taxi company is also seeking more drivers to join its network - it's offering new drivers an additional €200 sign-up bonus to join up.

"The busiest day of the year for taxis will be Saturday 17th December - the Saturday before Christmas - followed closely by Saturday 10th, Friday 16th and New Year's Eve," the company told Newstalk.

It has set no cap on the sum of 'overtime' bonuses which individual taxi drivers can earn.

The money will be given to drivers who complete five peak-time jobs per week - they will receive a bonus for every extra peak-time job they complete after that.

Hailo will pay drivers on December 22nd - just ahead of Christmas.

Tim Arnold, Hailo General Manager commented on the company's Christmas plans: "We want to incentivise and reward our drivers to offer the best service possible to Hailo passengers over the festive period," he said.

"We expect drivers who participate should be able to build up a bonus of at least €300 over the coming period.

"Hailo customers are generating 50% more journeys per Hailo driver than this time last year and so it’s the perfect time for drivers to join the Hailo fleet ahead of the winter rush," he added.

In 2015, demand skyrocketed during these peak times - Saturdays in December were 104% busier than the average Saturday from January to November.
