A cross-party delegation from the Dáil will meet with Ibrahim Halawa today in an Egyptian jail.

The Dubliner has now been held for three years, three months and 14 days without trial in the country.

Mr Halawa, from Firhouse in Dublin, has been held in an Egyptian jail since his arrest during demonstrations against the ousting of president Mohammed Morsi in August 2013.

Concern has repeatedly been raised about his health, and he is currently understood to be on hunger strike.

His mass trial was adjourned for the 17th time in December, and he is due back in court next week.

Green Party Leader Eamon Ryan is among the delegation of TDs in Egypt.

He says that while he believes the trip is positive, he does not want to get anyone's hopes up.

"There's been so much false hope in a sense over the last three years," Deputy Ryan said.

"I'd be nervous about making any falsely optimistic statements, but I hope this visit helps and I hope sooner rather than later he can return home."

The TDs were invited to Egypt by Dr Ali Abdel Aal, speaker of the House of Representatives of Egypt, and arrived in the country yesterday.

In a statement, the Oireachtas says the purpose of the visit is to discuss parliamentary relations and foster bilateral cooperation in the areas of foreign relations, communications, agriculture, trade, transport and tourism.
