The Government has approved funding for the development of new social housing units in Dublin's north inner city.

72 homes will be built on a vacant site on Dominick Street. Community facilities will also be developed, with the entire regeneration project due to receive €22m in Government funding.

50 households who are already living in the Dominick Street flats will be rehoused in the new units, while a further 22 will be taken off the housing list.

Public Expenditure Minister Paschal Donohoe says today is the culmination of a decade long project led by the community, and has been 'long anticipated' by residents.

In a statement, the Environment, Community and Local Government Minister Simon Coveney said: "The residents of Dominick Street and its environs have been strong advocates for the redevelopment of the east side of Dominick Street for some time now and I think that this project will make a significant contribution to the regeneration of the area as a whole.

"An investment in this area is also a priority from a social policy perspective, encompassing social housing improvements as well as supporting social, community and economic renewal. This development is one of the first new major regeneration projects in Dublin’s north inner city, which has seen more than its share of challenges in recent times," he added.

The news was also welcomed by Lord Mayor of Dublin Brendan Carr, who suggested that the development will make an 'important contribution' to the area's regeneration.
