Investigations are continuing into the cause of a crash near Fermoy Co Cork that claimed the lives of a mother and daughter this morning.

The women have been named locally as 58 year old Geraldine Clancy and her 22 year old daughter Louise from Leitrim near Kilworth.

They died when their car collided with another car on the Fermoy to Ballyduff road around 11.30 this morning.

It is believed their vehicle ended up in a river.

It happened on the R667 Fermoy to Ballyduff Road at 11.20am today.

The female driver of the other car was not seriously injured.

The road at the scene is closed to facilitate an examination of the area by garda forensic collision investigators.
