The Garda Representative Association (GRA) say they need more time to consider a new pay deal.

The group, which represents 10,500 gardaí around the country, met today to discuss an agreement proposed during talks with the Department of Justice.

The Central Executive Committee, made up of divisional representatives from around the country, considered the terms of the draft agreement.

It includes the restoration of the rent allowance, the removal of the pay freeze and partial pay restoration in 2017.

The GRA decided to adjourn discussions until Wednesday September 26th - when it is due to hold a Special Delegate Conference in Tullamore.

Ciaran O'Neill, president of the GRA, says: "The Garda Representative Association has been in talks with the Department of Justice for some time now.

"The Central Executive Committee today has decided that further discussion is required and as a result, will meet again at the Special Delegate Conference on Wednesday, where representatives will be given the opportunity to debate the package and then decide whether or not to ballot our membership."

The GRA recently balloted its 10,500 members on their willingness to engage in industrial action.

It is thought this new pay deal may avert such action.
