Tributes have been paid to the heroic acts of Caitriona Lucas, who has been laid to rest in Clare.

The 41-year-old Coast Guard volunteer died during a search and recovery operation off the Kilkee coast on Monday, when the boat she was in capsized.

The mother-of-two was the first serving member of the Irish Coast Guard to lose her life while on duty.

President Michael D Higgins has also written to her family to express his condolences.

Parish priest Denis Crosby said Caitriona was a great spirit.

"The flags fly at half mast on all the official buildings today in the country.

"And why not? [It is] to salute a great spirit, a spirit of service, and a gracious, wonderful woman."
