It is arguably one of the most famous residences in the world - and now Buckingham Palace is looking for a live-in housekeeper.

A job advertised on The Royal Household website is seeking applicants for 'Housekeeping Assistant'.

It is based at Buckingham Palace in a permanent capacity, full time and five days a week.

The package includes a 15% employer contribution pension scheme, plus benefits.

"This is a live-in position (for which there is a salary adjustment) with meals provided", the advert says - but no salary figure is mentioned.

"You will be rewarded with a comprehensive benefits package, including 33 days holiday (inclusive of bank holidays), a 15% employer contribution pension scheme (with the option for flexibility - to increase contributions or draw down as salary), all meals provided, training and development, as well as a range of recreational facilities," it adds.

"In addition, as this is a live-in role, you will be provided with accommodation, for which your salary will be adjusted."

In a description of the role, the website says: "This is no standard housekeeping role. You'll work, and live, in stunning historic settings, ensuring that they're presented to their best for colleagues, guests and, of course, the Royal Family.

"Aiming for the highest standards, you'll clean and care for interiors and items from carpets and furniture to historic vases and irreplaceable paintings.

"You'll take care of guests and support special events too. And, in an environment where development and training is commonplace, you'll be able to grow your skills far beyond your immediate role."

The palace's Household department handles everything involved in the official and private entertaining across all the British royal residences.

And while housekeeping or hospitality experience would be an asset, it says this is "by no means essential".
