The Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin says she is against the banning of amplifiers on Dublin's streets.

Busking by-laws are the focus of tonight's Dublin City Council meeting, with many calling for amplification to be banned.

However, Labour Party Councillor Rebecca Moynihan says backing tracks cause the most noise.

"I personally am not in favour of amplification - I think it adds to certain acts," she said.

"But I think backing tracks will have a big impact overall - it's the noise levels in the city that I think people are concerned about," she argued.

In a statement ahead of the meeting, Sinn Féin Councillor Chris Andrews said: "DCC receive regular complaints about severe congestion on Grafton Street, and are now proposing to restrict dance acts, [circus] acts and large bands to the St Stephens Green end of the street where there is a more suitable space available.

"The two hour performance limit is being abused and requires amendment," he added.

A Dublin City Council committee last month recommended banning street performers from using backing tracks.
