More than a dozen people are feared dead after a landslide in Indonesia's East Java province.

The catastrophe struck near Banaran village early today, damaging at least thirty homes.

Remaining residents are being evacuated and officials from the national disaster agency say emergency teams are clearing the mud fall to search for other victims.

Up to 28 people are said to be buried underneath rubble and debris caused by the landslide.

Saturday's landslide hit as people were harvesting ginger at the foot of a hill, officials said.

Floods and landslides triggered by heavy seasonal rains are common in Indonesia.
