More than a year since his untimely passing, a crowdfunding campaign has been launched to gather funds to finance the construction of a monument dedicated to David Bowie in his London birthplace of Brixton.
Created by artists as This Ain’t Rock’n’Roll, the three-storey tall lightning bolt is a reference to the musician’s iconic Aladdin Sand album cover, where parts of his face were painted with the design.
The Crowdfunder page says the drive hopes to raise £990,000 (€1.2m) in the next four weeks to bankroll the monument, which would be positioned next to street artist Jimmy C’s celebrated Aladdin Sane mural that appeared shortly after the singer lost his battle to cancer in January last year.
The creative team behind the sculpture describe the nine-metre tall piece as an “iconic lightning flash,” made of “gravity-defying red and blue-sprayed stainless steel.”
The fund outline continues: “Unexplained, yet utterly familiar; a poignant reminder that life does exist beyond the everyday. That music and art and curiosity are viral, positive contributors to our collective existence.”
As with many pledge drives, supporters are offered rewards for different sums of money offered, with a £20 donation guaranteeing the giver’s name a place on the official David Bowie memorial website. Those with pockets deep enough to reach £10,000 will get a smaller version of the sculpture, named Ziggy Zag, in reference to Bowie’s stage name Ziggy Stardust.
With 26 days remaining, the fund has so far raised more than £36,000.
