A commemorative plaque remembering the 1916 Rising has been vandalised in north Dublin.

It commemorates the men and women of the 1st Battalion of Irish Volunteers who attempted to block and stall the advancement of British troops through Cabra and into the city centre during the Easter Rising.

It was erected by Dublin City Council at Cabra Bridge on the North Circular Road by the Lord Mayor of Dublin Nial Ring on December 15th last.

Cathaoirleach of the 1916 Relatives Association, Brian O'Neill, said: "The Cabra Historically Society have worked tirelessly to have this plaque erected.

"It was erected with honour, dignity and respect for the men and women of 1916.

"The person or persons who tore it down acted with dishonour and disrespect not only to our 1916 relatives but to the local community".

The damaged plaque has been recovered.

The 1916 Relatives Association said it will work with the Lord Mayor and local councillor Cieran Perry to ensure it is restored.

Lord Mayor Ring added: "Only a couple of weeks ago I unveiled this plaque which commemorates the men and women of the area who attempted to block and stall the advancement of British troops through Cabra and into the city centre during the Easter Rising.

"The plaque organised by the Cabra Historical Society commemorated the first engagement of the 1916 Rising at Cabra Bridge."

"I will ensure that it is reinstalled at the site in the very near future.

"We will not allow the bravery of the Republican revolutionaries of 1916 to be disrespected. Cabra is proud of its Republican history."
