The creator of the Big Mac has died at the age of 98.

Jim Delligatti came up with the iconic burger nearly 50 years ago in Pittsburg, where he was operating some early McDonald's franchise restaurants.

The burger - which became a mainstay on McDonald's menus from the late 1960s onward - is particularly known for its double patties and 'special sauce'. 

It has proven so popular it even spawned its own economic index - a 'lighthearted' way of measuring purchasing power across the world.

The fast food company took to Twitter today to pay tribute to the man who created its most famous product:
