Police in India have confirmed they will recognise driving licences stored on a smartphone, once they are presented within an application called Digilocker. 

Digilocker was launched in India last year and encourages people to store official paperwork such as ID, voter cards and college certificates in the cloud. The idea of the initiative is to reduce the amount of admin expense and streamlines government.  

This will means Indian users will be able to access digital copies of their licence and registration information at any time.

They will need to install an app called Digilocker onto their device and register with the service. The police in India have confirmed they will recognise the documents presented for inspection on a smart phone.

Drivers in Iowa, US, are being encouraged to keep an electronic copy of their licence on their phones, similar to how electronic boarding passes are stored and issued by airlines.
