A number of media owners have refused to run marketing advertisement for Newstalk's General Election campaign.
An advertisement which features an ultrasound scan of a foetus accompanied by the slogan "Time to terminate the 8th?" was deemed too provocative by some advertisers.
Two of the country’s largest outdoor Clear Channel and JC Decaux have refused to carry the poster stating that it may inflame opinion to the extent that it leaves their plant, property and sites vulnerable to damage.
One of the owners claimed that their staff have suffered personal harassment from various groups in previous outdoor campaigns relating to this subject matter.
Meanwhile, the Irish Independent have also refused to carry a press advert with the same image as they deemed it too controversial.
Newstalk Editor-in-Chief Garrett Harte stated: "The fact that these media owners felt compelled to stop the posting of an advert on the subject really demonstrates the divisive nature of this issue.
"Our role is to lead the debate, but it's certainly an issue that our listeners have engaged with. Newstalk need to put this topic firmly on the agenda for discussion" he said.
Other adverts in the campaign concern the migrant crisis, employment and the future of schools in Ireland.
