Communications Minister Denis Naughten and Rural Minister Heather Humphreys are set to appoint 'broadband officers' around the country. This person will act as a liaison between councils and communications firms.

It's hoped that the creations of these roles will help fast-track discussions on how to improve broadband services around the country. Firms and citizens of every county will now have one point of contact to register worries or seek updates on the process.

This is part of a wider attempt to address the nationwide broadband difficulties, including more than 20 other recommendations expected to be published in a report on the issue later today.

The contract for implementing the National Broadband Plan will be awarded and signed next year.

Once that's done, the national rollout will begin. It's hoped that every home in Ireland will have access to high-speed broadband by 2020.
