Hardcore Android fans always wait with bated breath to see what the next version of the software will bring. Google confirmed on Tuesday that Android O is on the way and gave us a small bit of insight as to what we can expect.

Some of the key features of Android O include better battery life, more notifications control and a picture-in-picture mode for phones and tablets. The software is available to developers now, however, it's worth noting that this is the unfinished version.

For Google to improve the battery life of devices, it's thought they will restrict what apps do whilst active on a phone but not in use.  Android O will also try to provide better notifications management for users.

"Building on the work we began in Nougat, Android O puts a big priority on improving a user's battery life," David Burke, vice president of engineering for Android, wrote in a blog post.

The picture-in-picture feature will enable users to continue watching a video whilst using other apps. This feature was only available on Android TV up to this point.

The company will detail the features in more depth at its annual software developer conference, Google I/O, in May.
