The number of women contesting the upcoming General Election already exceeds the amount that ran in 2011.

So far 89 women have confirmed as candidates according to the Women for Election group.

At the moment about 30% of the candidates announced to contest the election are female.

Suzanne Collins, Director of Operations and Campaigns with Women for Election, says the new gender balance legislation has led to the increase.
