90 people have been rescued after a partially built flyover collapsed in India.

At least 23 people were killed as a result of the collapse.

Rescuers worked through the night with saws, cranes and even their bare hands to dig through the wreckage in Kolkata.

Many of those rescued are thought to have serious injuries.

Local police commissioner Ajay Tyagi told Reuters that “many of the people rescued have been seriously injured. Many could still be buried below the debris".

According to reports, the collapse saw large concrete slabs from a construction site fell onto traffic below.

Some witnesses were critical of the initial response, with one saying there appears to be very little coordination on the ground.

Construction of the 2km flyover was supposed to be completed three years ago, but it has been delayed several times.
