During the period between Monday the 13th of February and Sunday the 19th of February, a total of 1,169 patients attended the Emergency Department of Cork University Hospital.
Out of those 1,169 patients, 410 of them required inpatient admission, according to the hopsital.
In a statement released today, Cork University Hospital said "Due to this increased level of activity and subsequent admissions, it is regrettable that elective procedures scheduled to take place on Monday 20th February were deferred.
"Patient care is paramount at Cork University Hospital and this situation is being treated as a priority by Hospital Management who are continuously monitoring the situation."
Due to overcrowding in the A&E, the hospital is urging people to contact their GP first "Hospital management have requested that, where appropriate, the public contact their GP in the first instance and explore all other options available to them prior to attending the Emergency Department if their needs are not urgent."
As of today, 28 people are on trolleys in Cork University Hospital which is the highest in the country. The latest figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation show that in total 306 people are on trolleys across the country.
