Donald Trump has cryptically warned that we are living in the "calm before the storm" - but has refused to explain what that means.

The US President made the remarks at a White House photo opportunity - following a high-level meeting with military leaders.

Flanked by officers and their spouses ahead of a dinner, Mr Trump told reporters: "You guys know what this represents? Maybe it's the calm before the storm."

Reporters asked whether he was referring to Iran or ISIS, but Mr Trump left them guessing, replying: "You'll find out."

Earlier, he told his military representatives that he expected them to provide "a broad range of military options, when needed, at a much faster pace " in the future.

I know that government bureaucracy is slow, but I am depending on you to overcome the obstacles of bureaucracy,” he said.

Military meeting

The high-level military meeting saw the president discussing Iran and North Korea with senior military officers.

“In North Korea, our goal is denuclearisation,” he said. “We cannot allow this dictatorship to threaten our nation or our allies with unimaginable loss of life."

"We will do what we must do to prevent that from happening. And it will be done, if necessary, believe me.”

Iran nuclear deal

He also used the meeting to make clear his continued displeasure with Iran - accusing the country of "breaking the spirit" of the international agreement signed in 2015 aimed at curbing the country's nuclear programme.

"They have not lived up to the spirit of the agreement," Mr Trump said in the Cabinet Room.

He claimed the Iranian regime supports terrorism and exports violence and chaos across the Middle East.

"That is why we must put an end to Iran's continued aggression and nuclear ambitions,” he said.

Mr Trump is expected to announce soon he would "de-certify" the landmark agreement, but he said only: "You will be hearing about Iran very shortly."

Iran has warned that the deal is not renegotiable - but added that if the other international signatories remain on board it could be salvaged.
