When you think of Samsung and 2016, chances are you think of the "exploding phones". This is far from ideal in Samsung's world, but it seems that the Note 7 saga may finally be drawing to a close.

The company has updated the software for the remaining Note 7 devices in Europe to ensure that their battery will not be charged beyond 30%. This update is to encourage the final few owners to hand in their smartphones.

Samsung issued a global recall for the Galaxy Note 7 device back in September, following complaints about exploding batteries. It's thought that 10% of Note 7 owners in Europe have yet to hand in their phones.

"This new battery software update is specifically designed to reinforce to the remaining minority of customers to immediately replace their device," says a statement issued by the company.

Reports suggest Samsung has taken different steps in other regions to encourage people to turn in their phones. An update for Canadian Note 7 owners saw all radio communications on the phone being turned off.
