One of the more unusual but popular internet memes of recent years has been 'Ryan Gosling won't eat his cereal'. For those who haven't seen one of the clips, the meme involves short clips of Gosling's performances, with the actor seemingly refusing to eat his cereal from a superimposed cereal spoon entering the frame - a simple idea that proved to have surprising comic potential. It also helped popularise Twitter's Vine service soon after it launched.

The meme was created by Scottish filmmaker Ryan McHenry, who sadly lost his two-year battle with bone cancer over the weekend, aged 27.

McHenry had told The Verge that the popularity of the meme helped him cope with the diagnosis, with online friends and fans even raising more than $10,000 to help him transition back to daily life after his treatment. On the meme's future, he said "the only conclusion I can see out of this whole thing is to have Ryan Gosling respond to this. Even if it’s just him eating cereal."

After an online campaign following McHenry's death, Ryan Gosling has finally eaten his cereal. The actor posted a Vine showing him enjoying a bowl of corn flakes, along with a tweet paying tribute to the late meme creator:

A page has been set up in memory of Ryan McHenry to raise money for charity Sarcoma UK.
