An Irish-born scientist has become one of three winners of this year's Nobel Prize in Medicine.

William C Campbell was awarded the prize - along with Satoshi Omura of Japan and Youyou Tu from China.

The prize was given to them for their discoveries that helped doctors fight malaria and infections caused by roundworm.

The winners of the physics, chemistry and peace prizes are to be announced later this week.

In a statement, the Nobel committee says: "The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2015 was divided, one half jointly to William C Campbell and Satoshi Omura 'for thier discoveries concerning a novel therapy against infections caused by roundworm parasites' and the other half to Youyou Tu 'for her discoveries concerning a novel therapy against Malaria'".

Dr Campbell was born in 1930 in Ramelton, Co Donegal - and is currently affiliated with Drew University in New Jersey.

He has been the recipient of numerous awards and distinctions in the US and elsewhere.

He has also been awarded a doctorate in science by his alma mater, Trinity College.

The winners will share the 8 million Swedish Kronor (€854,452) prize money.

One half will go between Dr Campbell and Omura, and the other half will go to Youyou Tu.

Each winner will also get a diploma and a gold medal at the annual award ceremony on December 10th.
