Every week, Darragh Doyle – a man who knows his way around the Internet – joins the Moncrieff show live in studio to fill us all in on the most useful and uselessly amusing apps and sites he's found making his rounds online in the last seven days.
Here's what Darragh covered today...
- An opening video: the struggle is real...
Sometimes a video of a very young child trying to break a board in half with a dainty Taekwan-Do stomp is the thing you didn't know you needed to see today.
- The Funky Crayons Kickstarter
Michelle is a mother of three living in Cavan who started her own business in 2013 called Funky Crayons.
Michelle noticed how wasteful birthday candles were and invented Wickids, the birthday candle that works afterwards as a crayon. They will come in the usual number shaped and also robots and princesses and anything kids love, even letters spelling out their name! World's first birthday candle that works afterwards as a crayon!
Many listeners may be familiar with the big music blogs but a newer, smaller at the moment one is CeolCaint by Rachel Masterson. As well as the features you might expect, like interviews, music news and so on, one of the features is “A Cuppa With” which is where Rachel has cups of teas and the chats with a range of musicians - so far she’s had cups of tea with up and coming musicians like Nella, like The Klares, White Chalk, Luke S and more.
[Where's the Jump?]
Where’s The Jump? is a website cataloguing all the jump scares from major movies, along with a short description and the time in the movie the scare occurs. Star rating is also provided based on the intensity and frequency of jump scares in the film. A movie with four or five stars suggests a seriously “jumpy” experience while a zero star movie indicates a movie completely free of jump scares.
- Taylor, your personal travel assistant
[Taylor]
A bot that you can type to for personal travel recommendations. Taylor is Your personal travel assistant that tells you where to go. She’s a bot that responds to your common queries when you arrive in a city - and tries to make your travels easier by giving you advice on where to go, what to do, and who to meet near you.
[Four walls, rainy days]
Four Walls, Rainy Days is a website dedicated to documenting life with a toddler in Cork City. Lisa Ryan (23) is a mother to one small boy, just over a year old now, and she’s documenting her life with him.
[Four walls, rainy days]
There’s a mixture of things they do within the city, different events that are on and general parenting bits with pieces on post natal depression, breastfeeding, the ever present Mammy Guilt, returning to work, childcare options and everything else in between.
Notabli promises to take all your favorite photos and videos of your kids – and have them automatically organised and privately shared with the people you love.
Save more than just photos and videos - you can also post quotes, audio clips, and notes using your phone, tablet, or the web. They are automatically organized, making it easy to find them later by kid, date, and location. The people you’ve invited to keep up with your kids automatically see the moments as they are posted and get email updates. Or share any moment with a simple link.
[Human Benchmark]
Something you can do right now – check how fast your reaction time is compared to millions of people around the world. It’s ridiculously simple; just click when the website colour changes from red to green. Then you see how you compare with others.
Tired of pesky tourists coming over to Ireland with their money, clogging up paths and thoroughfares as they stroll through towns and villages? Well, now there're two apps to get them out of the way! The video may be in Japanese, but managing to evade slow pedestrians is a universal language.
- And finally...
Two men from the parish of Drumlish/Ballinamuck in Co Longford have produced one of the Irish videos of the year. Podge Gill and Emmett Collum from the band Brave Giant were heading home from a gig when they decided to record classified ads for businesses in the region of Cavan and North Longford.
