A court has heard that a man charged over a fatal stabbing in Co Clare told gardaí following his arrest: "Nobody was meant to die that night".

21-year old Robbie Walsh, of Island View, Kilrush, Co Clare appeared before a vacation sitting of Ennis District Court on Tuesday afternoon charged over the fatal stabbing of father of one Karl Haugh in Kilkee last Sunday.

The accused, Mr Walsh, was not called to give evidence during his bail application this afternoon.

Mr Walsh appeared before the court charged with assault, in which he intentionally or recklessly caused serious harm to 25-year-old Karl Haugh at Marian Estate, Kilkee last Sunday.

The court heard Mr Walsh told gardaí following his arrest: "Nobody was meant to die that night".

During the bail application, Detective Sergeant Padraig Frawley said the State will allege that Mr Walsh and two other persons - not before the court - had called to two houses in Marian Estate after 1am last Sunday looking for Mr Haugh.

When the party of three found Mr Haugh a fight ensued and weapons were used and Mr Haugh was stabbed, the court heard.

When gardaí arrived on the scene they recovered knives including a bloodied blade and golf clubs, Detective Sergeant Frawley alleged.

He said gardaí feared that if granted bail, Mr Walsh would commit further alleged offences and that gardaí feared witnesses may be intimidated.

Judge Marie Keane remanded Mr Walsh in custody to Limerick Prison to appear before the court again next Monday.
