People living near a lighthouse in County Down that once guided the Titanic are angry over plans for the traditional lamp to be replaced with an LED.

Authorities in Dublin in charge of the island's lighthouses claim the mercury bath it sits in is a health hazard.

The yellow-and-black striped lighthouse at St John's Point in Killough is a listed building.

But volunteer lifeboat member Ross Mulhall says the light serves a useful purpose.
