The man who became famous as the voice of the Apollo moon launches has died.

He was 84 and collapsed as he was attending an event at the Space Centre in Florida.

Jack King was a NASA public affairs official, between 1960 and 1975. He returned to Kennedy Space Station to work with space shuttle contractor United Space Alliance in 1997, where he stayed until his retirement in 2010.

Kennedy Space Station Director, Bob Cabana, said, "Jack King counted down the launch of Apollo 11 and all of us watching on television will never forget his calm, reassuring demeanor.

"Jack was a true professional and helped us understand in common English the complexities of space flight. He was great at communicating what we do at NASA and he will be missed," he added.

Mr King counted down the historic launch of Apollo 11 on 16th July, 1969:
