Two-time winner Rory McIlroy won't play at next week's Dubai Desert Classic golf.

The decision comes after the World Number 2 withdrew from the Abu Dhabi Championship last week with a rib injury.

A tweet from the European Tour's account's confirmed the news.

The four time major winner sustained the rib injury at the South Africa Open the weekend before, although he played through the pain to miss out on victory to Graeme Storm only by way of a deciding playoff.

After withdrawing from the Abu Dhabi Championship, he had said that: "In situations like this you simply have to listen to the experts and the team I have consulted have all advised me to rest until my rib has fully recovered."

At the time, he also mused whether testing new golf equipment may have had an adverse effect, remarking, "If it's a muscular thing, it's fatigue. I've hit a lot of golf balls over the three or four weeks testing equipment. I've hit a lot of drivers. You put a lot of force on your body when you do that. I'll just take it easy over the next few days and with some rest and treatment I should be fine."

McIlroy has previously won the Dubai Desert Classic in 2009 and 2015.
