'Police Academy' actor George Gaynes dies aged 98

US actor George Gaynes, best known for his role in 'Police Academy', has died aged 98.

The Finnish-born singer and actor became a household name for his role as Commandant Eric Lassard.

He also appeared in classics such as 'The Way We Were' and 'Tootsie'.

On TV, he played Henry Warnimont on the NBC series 'Punky Brewster'.

He also had a role on the US soap opera 'General Hospital'.

His agent, Jonathan Howard, told The Hollywood Reporter his death was "a sad, sad loss. But he had a really long, great life".

He retired in 2003 after featuring in 'Just Married', alongside Ashton Kutcher and Brittany Murphy.

He was married to actress Allyn Ann McLerie and had two children - one of whom died in a car crash in 1989.

Reports say Gaynes died at his home in Washington.
