Fianna Fail leader Micheál Martin TD is accusing the government of lacking "urgency and ambition" in its response to Brexit.

He's called for the creation of an "urgent national plan" to reduce the impact of a hard Brexit, and to open up new markets.

In a speech at the Seán Moylan Commemoration in County Cork this afternoon, he said the British government's current policy was "a shambles".

The Fianna Fáil leader claimed Brexit is already undermining Irish businesses and communities.

Mr Martin called for an EU funded programme to help businesses, like the agri-food sector, which look set to be the hardest hit by Brexit.

His statement comes as 60 Conservative MPs are urging the British Prime Minister to quit the European Union as soon as possible.

They're demanding a change of strategy, including leaving the EU's single market and customs union.

A group of Tories is also asking Theresa May to drop her opposition to a vote by MPs on the triggering of Article 50.

European leaders have come to a 27-nation consensus that a “hard Brexit” is likely to be the only way to see off future populist insurgencies, which could lead to the break-up of the European Union.

Acting UKIP leader Nigel Farage warned European leaders that Marine Le Pen, leader of the Front National, could deliver a political sensation bigger than Brexit and win France’s presidential election next spring – a result that would mean it was “game over” for 60 years of EU integration.
