While Shannon Airport traffic was down 21.1%, higher load factors meant an overall 7% increase in passenger numbers in the year to date.

In total, international arrivals and departures at State airports was up by 6.6% in August, when compared with the same time last year.

"This equates to an average of 705 flights at the State airports every day", the IAA says.

When combined, total flights in Irish airspace increased by 7.4% when compared to August 2014.

There was an average of 1,776 daily flights last month, with the busiest day being August 20th - which had 1,875 flights in Irish airspace.

Eamonn Brennan, chief executive of the IAA, said: "These latest figures show that Dublin continues to record very strong growth and has now returned to pre-downturn levels".

"Looking to the future, the IAA believes that the development of a parallel runway at Dublin is crucial to ensuring its continued growth and development as a secondary international hub. We are also very happy with Cork’s modest growth performance in August".

Ireland's transatlantic traffic also saw strong growth - with an increase of 10.1% in en-route traffic movements - flights that pass through Irish airspace but do not land - during August.

And Europe to North America flights saw an increase of 5.2%.
