Conor McGregor looks set to fight to the UFC Lightweight Championship whilst retaining the Featherweight belt.
That's according to UFC President Dana White, who was speaking in America last night on Fox Sports' "UFC Tonight". If McGregor were to fight Lightweight Champion Rafael dos Anjos and win, the Dubliner would become the first fighter in the history of the UFC to be a simultaneous two-weight champion.
“Conor has said that he would like to win the 155-pound belt and fight four times a year and defend both belts. If anybody can do it, Conor McGregor can. This guy has pretty much done everything he said he would do, so, I’m interested.”
If McGregor were to move to the Lightweight division, before defending his Featherweight belt, it would mean Frankie Edgar and Jose Aldo would have to wait in line for a title shot. Edgar is unbeaten in his last five fights and knocked out Chad Mendes in the first round of their fight last month.
White added that if McGregor moved up a weight and kept the Featherwight, he would be breaking precedent. "I would say if you're going to move up in weight, you have to give up the belt. But Conor has done everything he said he would do. He loves to fight. He really likes money, so if anybody could do it, it's probably him."
