Westmeath senior footballer John Heslin has questioned the merits of the April club-only month in GAA.

The 25 year old St Loman's GAA club man feels it has negatively impacted inter-county sides around the country on the eve of the 2018 Championship.

He was speaking to Off The Ball's John Duggan at the 2018 Leinster GAA launch.

"I probably don't agree with the whole April for the club. I think that it threw a spanner into the preparations for a lot of inter-county teams" he said.

"For example, look at the Westmeath hurlers are [back] out on the the 6th of May, so for the previous four weeks they're supposed to be with their clubs. I just don't where the logic is in that thinking.

"So, look, it suited me well on a personal level but I don't think in the broader scheme of things, I don't think April for the clubs is a good idea."

He also discussed the chances of Westmeath potentially being able to qualify for the Super 8 stage of the Championship later in the competition as the new format arrives.
