Inches away from the TV, willing another man to mess up.

That is the strange situation in which Irish PGA Tour pro Séamus Power found himself this weekend, to try and secure his Tour status.

Power finished 125th in the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina, and will have full Tour status after Sergio Garcia failed to secure the top 20 finish he needed to make the Playoffs for the first time in his career.

"I was watching it in my apartment and I only turned it on when he was early in the back nine. I took a quick glance that confirmed what I thought, that it wasn't going to work out - he was playing well," recounts Séamus.

He also told us about the surrealism of celebrating another man's misfortune, and made it clear that he was not to pleasant company on Sunday evening.

"You never want to wish it on anyone, but Sergio of all guys - he has just won a Major - so I don't worry too much about Sergio!

"Nobody would have been safe to watch it with me, to be honest. I was doing my best not to watch but when he was getting to the back nine I tuned in a little bit and then I couldn't move!

"I was sitting there for a couple of hours no more than six to eight inches from the TV! It was a crazy roller-coaster but just having no control over it was the worst part."

Support from back home was not in short supply, as messages from friends and family back in Waterford and beyond reminded him he was not watching alone. The result means that Séamus can now go ahead to plan the next working year.

"It's much easier. I don't have to worry about re-ranks and re-shuffles. It's extremely helpful. It makes the next twelve months a lot more straightforward for me, and much easier to plan which gives you a little bit more peace of mind."
