Last night, the Pat Gilroy era got off to a strong start as Dublin hurler's saw off Meath convincingly by a 4-17 to 0-14 margin in the Bord na Mona Walsh Cup.

Two goals from Fionn Ó Riain Broin and further ones from Donal Burke and Cian McBride saw the former Dublin football manager Gilroy get off to a winning start in another code after being ratified in the role late last year.

Oisin Langan was at Abbottstown for us to take in the game and afterwards he caught up with former Dublin hurler Joey Boland to get his thoughts on what was witnessed.

"He can take a couple of good positives from it," said Boland of what Gilroy will have taken from the performance and result against Meath.

"There were some good showings from the likes of Fergal Whitely and Paul Winters there up front. The biggest thing you can take away from these matches is you can actually see these guys playing against opposition.

"You can do all the training you want but it's about performing out there on the day against opposition. But it's shaking the cobwebs off, getting the touch in at this time of year. I think we've got Antrim coming up so a busy weekend ahead. I think they've got three games this weekend but there's such a big panel there. There's a panel of 50 so guys need to get two or three or four chances against decent opposition to really put their hand up and make a claim for a place in the league come the 27th of January."
