Dominic Robertson-McCoy's red card for stamping on Leinster's Josh van der Flier's neck left former Ireland coach Eddie O'Sullivan bemused.

Speaking on Monday Night Rugby - in association with Eir Sport - Eddie spoke about the coming together and likely outcome.

“It is ridiculous, I don’t know what went through his head.

“I don’t know the guy at all and I thought Andy Friend dealt with it well afterwards; he defended the player in terms of his integrity by saying that he’s a good fellow and [he didn’t] know why he did that.

“But it was a moment of madness. It was so shocking to see because you don’t see that anymore, and rightly so, in the professional game.”

“In the bad old days, and in the amateur game, there is a lot of that around, because there are no TMOs and there was no assistant referees. There was a lot of that went on, and it was wrong.

“It is so unusual to see that now in a game. He was just off the bench and he lashed out, which was crazy. But it was a straight red card, end of story.”

The bigger concern for Connacht and Andy Friend is now how long any potential ban against the tighthead could be, as there will almost certainly be further disciplinary action against Robertson-McCoy.

The hearing will take place on Thursday evening via video link.
