Based on Jose Mourinho's public comments about the pre-season situation at Manchester United, it would appear to be all doom and gloom.

Last season's Premier League runners up have made few moves in the transfer window thus far - other than Fred and young full back Diego Dalot, much to Mourinho's obvious and publicly stated frustration.

But things are far rosier in the Old Trafford garden than Mourinho portrays as United We Stand editor Andy Mitten told Joe Molloy as we tried to get a handle on why the United manager is emitting high doses of pessimism about the season ahead.

"The tone of a football club comes from the manager and I've spoken to lots of the players on this tour," he said.

"There's no real problem. The players are fine. The players are looking forward to next season."

Of the transfer window deadline, he added, "There is still time. United are still trying to sign a central defender and when the fans see Mourinho, they just see a guy moaning all the time and it just doesn't look good."

But that aside, Mitten also says feedback from fans is that they want Mourinho to remain in charge of the club.

Mitten, who has been surprised by the negative tone struck by the Portuguese manager, also pointed out that the opening round of fixtures in the Premier League are not as difficult as, for example, David Moyes' debut (and only) season in charge.

"There are also positives attached to Manchester United. The start of the season could be much, much worse in terms of their opponents," he explained.

"When David Moyes arrived, he faced Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool within the first five games.

"[This season it's] Leicester at home, Brighton in the second game, Tottenham at home - Tottenham are missing just as many players as Manchester United. The start of the season could be more challenging. The games are not coming thick and fast. There's no Champions League qualifier as there has been in previous seasons, partly because he led Manchester United to second in the league last year and I am surprised at how negative he has been."
