A man in his 30s is in a stable condition in hospital after being shot by a garda in Co Limerick.

The incident took place in Shanagolden, near Foynes, at around 2.30am this morning.

The man, who is believed to be from eastern Europe, was shot in the face during a planned Garda operation.

The Garda Ombudsman (GSOC) is investigating, and investigators have been deployed to the scene this morning.

Speaking to Pat Kenny Show here on Newstalk, Conor Feehan of the Irish Independent and Herald explained that the shooting followed a garda call-out to a robbery in north Cork.

"It's all under investigation at the moment [...] It would appear that the early narrative coming from the scene is this shot was discharged from a Garda weapon, but that it was not discharged intentionally.

"That is now the matter that is under investigation this morning," he said.
