With New Years Eve approaching ‘Talking Books’ is using this occasion to reflect on two of the most popular features of 2014.

First up will be Susan’s conversation with Philip Schultz.

Philip is a highly decorated poet and has been working for over 30 years. Perhaps his most notable achievement was winning the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 2008 for his work ‘Failure.’ This was inspired by the life of his father and their relationship.

Listen in, this Sunday morning at 7am, as Susan chats with Philip about the influence of family on his work. How has this shaped him as a poet? And how does he view American society in the modern age?

Then, in part two, Susan will be discussing one of the giants of 20th century literature, Ernest Hemingway.

One of the true greats of American literary culture, Hemingway is best known for his works ‘The Sun Also Rises’, ‘A Farewell to Arms’, ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’ and ‘The Old Man and the Sea.’

For this discussion, Susan was joined by Nerys Williams from the School of English at UCD and Naomi Wood, author of ‘Mrs. Hemingway.’

Listen in as they chat about Hemingway’s inimitable approach to writing. Was he a domineering personality or a fragile soul? And is he the greatest ever American novelist?
